Die Humpin'!

This past Saturday night, I went and caught the boys of The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad play live at the Ottobar. Grandma's Dick, Horsepower, Captain Mediocrity, Pikesville Gynecologist and Chauncey (great stage names!) were in good form. They put up a great show!

I picked up their debut CD, 'Die Humpin'!', and right away I fed it into my IPod. I've been quite enjoying it, and 'digesting' it. The Squad's stylings are a unique combination of rockabilly and 'parody rock' with good dosages of hair-metal rock'n'roll thrown in the mix. The CD's well produced. And how can you not love some of the song titles: 'Give Me Something I've Heard Of', 'Don't Let Jesus Ruin Your Day' and 'I Wish I was A Black Man' (this song, btw, has a great faux-string arrangement. They did a very good job in their indie studio.)

If you're interested in checking out samples of their music, head out to http://www.flutesquad.com They also have their own myspace, which I believe is myspace.com/dirtymarmadukeflutesquad or just do a search on MySpace for the band name and it'll take you there.

Hot Fuzz Rawks!

I watched 'Hot Fuzz' Friday night. It's the latest film from Edgar Wright, the writer/director of the amazing 'Shaun Of The Dead'. Wright also did the hilarious 'Don't' trailer in the recent release of 'Grindhouse'. 'Hot Fuzz', I'm happy to say, is equally great. Howlingly hilarious at moments. Great Brit-inspired humor. Superbly edited. Hugely entertaining. It even has some nice 'horror' gory moments in it, though it's an action-comedy. I clapped, hooted out loud, and had a great time watching this movie.

Slow Thursday

Today's going really slow. I'm at work, fighting boredom and disinterest. Gray skies over Baltimore. Weather's still cold. At least tommorrow it's Friday.

It's a slow news day, and a slow 'internet day'. There's nothing capturing my attention today. This only makes my workday drag, and leaves me near completely exhausted by the time I get off work.

The Virginia Tech shootings have been dominating the news for the past few days. Jeebus, what a grand tragedy.

From a clinical standpoint, the Virginia Tech tragedy holds a certain to me, because of the twisted psychology of the perpretator. As a writer/filmmaker, I've a fascination to unravel the minds of people who commit such heinous crimes. It's always been beyond as to why someone would commit horrid murder. I think that if I weren't a filmmaker with the urge to tell stories, one of my alternative careers would have been that of a Forensic Psychologist or Pathologist, because such cases really get me thinking.

What kind of psychosis makes someone snap and do what this kid did? How long did it take for him to get to that point? How can someone like him not see the evil in his actions?

A couple of my future films contain characters such as this individual. I think that, at large, our society in general has no understanding as to how people grow to become so evil. By the time we see evil, it's too late; horrendous crimes have been committed and many people lose their lives. I'm talking Columbine here.. September 11.. and now this. How did it come to this?

And is that question which will fuel some of my future films--How did it come to this? The Virginia Tech mass murderer troubles started a long-time ago. And there were signs. Yet, he managed to slip and fall thru every 'safety net' which could have prevented what happened on Monday. How did it come to this? How do some people simply become walking, breathing 'black holes' who seem intent in inflicting suffering and snuffing the lives of others.

Also, already, we're beginning to see the typical reporting from the media about some of the 'causes' behind this asshole's actions: He was, apparently, a fan of Chanwook Park's 'Old Boy', and posed in a couple of pictures in similar poses as stills from that film. The typical mass media accusation--Did watching a movie make him do it? We also got that jerkoff lawyer in FL, Jack Thompson, using the tragedy and trying to blame video games for the killer's actions... even though there's been no evidence that he was a gamer. Thompson's a true idiot.

Regardless, what has happened at Virginia Tech is a terrible tragedy which will reverberate for years to come. It's a shame they couldn't get some help for that kid in time. And something tells me that this kind of modern illness will happen again. The question remains in my mind, and will continue to be there until I make these particular films I must make.

Good Weekend

Taking a moment of my Monday to look back upon the weekend. And I had a pretty good one.

On Saturday, I headed down to Wash DC, determined to catch the tail-end of the Cherry Blossom Tree Festival. Unfortunately, the trees had already shed most of their gorgeous foliage. I still enjoyed the day. The weather was a quite-decent 55 degrees. I parked my car next to the Capitol, walked around, and took some pictures.

I didn't know there was a National Museum of the Native American. I'll have to check it out in a future trip. Also, I've not been to the National Air and Space Museum in a very long while.

Came back to Baltimore on Saturday night just in time to catch Mason Jennings at The Recher here in Towson. It was a very good show, and actually my first live music show in quite a while. Mason performed most of the 'Boneclouds' album, as well as a lot of great-sounding songs from previous records (which I'll have to catch up with). I stayed for the grand majority of the show, but my legs were killing me from all the walking I did down on DC, so I left during his encore performance.

Sunday, I just took it easy, and worked on my taxes. And guess what?! I'm actually getting a decent chunk of change back from the government. Woooot!

Boneclouds by Mason Jennings

I've not bought new music in over 6 months. I've been starving for some new music. Finally, I picked up Mason Jennings' Boneclouds. I got it on the strength of Jenning's beautiful song, 'Be Here Now', which was a hit last summer. WTMD 89.7 Towson played it quite a lot. Jennings' a singer/songwriter with a flavor for acoustic guitar and folksy tunes. For the most part, the rest of the record (which I believe is his third) is strong. I'm digging tunes like 'Gentlest Hammer', 'If You Need A Reason' and 'If You Ain't Got Love'; the latter song has some great lyrics in particular.

Mason Jennings is playing Towson's Rechter Theater this weekend. It's only a skip-hop from my place, so I'm thinking of catching his live show. He has his own myspace at http://www.myspace.com/masonjennings

'Grindhouse' was just awesome

I went to see 'Grindhouse' at The Senator theater on Friday night. The movie was just awesome. Well...for the exception of Tarantino's boring-as-hell dialogue in 'Death Proof'. Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' was just bliss. And the fake trailers were hilarious!

For my official, embellished review, check it out at Horror-101.com:

My weekend was swell. I was rather productive, though I really do wish the weather would get warm already.

Great party last night...

I went to an awesome toga-themed party last night. It was for the birthday of Jon Schaumburg and his wonderful girl, Cheryl, members of the comedy troupe Mob TV. I gotta give it to Jon, Cheryl, Wes, and company--they throw the best parties.

Thanks, Wes, for hooking me up with a toga last night. I went to several costume shops yesterday, and I couldn't think of just buying a sheet and wrapping it around myself. Wes was so awesome to just commandeer a sheet, and stick it on me.

The food was great. The punch was even better. I woke up with a good hangover this morning: the sign of a great party.

I've begun to feel better. I'm less stressed. I've decided to loosen up on all 'my plans' and 'my goals'. I'm taking time to smell the flowers, and already a few days in, I'm doing much better.
